We want your arrival through Kilimanjaro International Airport to be easy. So here is your guide to navigating the airport and making the most of your time in our beautiful country.
1. Arriving at the Kilimanjaro International (JRO) airport:-
First off, relax… although it is an international airport, JRO or Kia as the locals call it, is not a big airport. When you arrive at Kia Airport, you’ll disembark from your flight and proceed to the immigration area through a heath screening which checks for temperature only. Make sure you have all of your documents ready because lines can be long and the arrivals section is not fully air conditioned. Here you will need your passport and visa, or documentation needed to obtain the visa ready to present to the immigration officers. Once you’ve been cleared, you can collect your luggage and proceed to the customs screening area and then further to the airport building exit.

4. Currency exchange:-

If you need to exchange currency, there are several banks and exchange bureaus located within the airport terminal just after you clear customs. It’s a good idea to exchange a small amount of money at the airport to cover immediate expenses like transportation and food. However, most properties will accept payment in US $, or Euros in addition to the local currency i.e. Tanzanian Shillings.
5. Food and drink:-
There are several restaurants and cafes located in the airport terminal, serving a variety of local and international cuisine. You can also find shops selling snacks and beverages along the way. Nearby Lodges offer fresh hot meals and fine dining options for the entire group or family if you have the time to sit and dine. We at Airport Planet Lodge offer restaurant services from 6:30 am to 10:00 pm without reservations. Our menus change everyday and we always include popular local, burger, sandwich and pizza options every day!
6. Shopping:-
There are several souvenir shops and stores selling local crafts, Tanzanite, and artisan goods within the airport terminal. Unfortunately most are within the departures terminal because those guests have more time to browse and shop and presents a great last minute opportunity to pick up some unique gifts for friends and family back home.
7. Wi-Fi access:-
Kilimanjaro Airport offers free Wi-Fi for passengers, so upon entering the terminal, find the free internet service to notify friends and family that you arrived safely. Likewise it is a great opportunity to stay connected while you wait for your flight on departure too.
8. Departing from the airport:-
When it’s time to depart, make sure you arrive at the airport with plenty of time to spare. Check-in counters typically open two hours before departure, and it’s recommended that you arrive at least three hours before your flight. After clearing the first security counter, you go to the check in window t drop off luggage and pick up boarding passes. Then you go through immigration and get your passport stamped before heading to the second security scanning point. After the second scan, now you can relax in the departure lounge and enjoy some last minute shopping, Wifi or a quick meal before your flight.
We hope you enjoy your time in Tanzania, and have a safe and pleasant journey through the Kilimanjaro International Airport!
